PDX Comedy Throwdown for Home Builder’s Foundation 1/10/12

Hey folks, on January 10 there will be a great show for a great cause! The Home Builders Foundation-HomeAid Portland is putting on a show to help build more homes for those in need, and they certainly picked a good line-up: Dwight Slade (Just for Laughs), Kyle Harbert (Harvey’s), Gabe Dinger (Helium Comedy), Ron Funches (Conan O’Brien), and Stacey Hallal (Curious Comedy Theater)! Show starts at 7pm at the Star Theater downtown. Tickets should be bought in advance, and you can pick them up here.

After a rad-uation show last week, check out the second half of the new crop of Portland comics. There are nearly 20 people on this show. At only $5 to get in, that works out to less than a quarter per performer. This is bargain basement comedy but it’s so awesome that our scene is blowing up. Tristian Spillman, bless your soul for figuring out how to fit all these faces on the poster.

Featuring the freshly-minted talents of:

Jeff Oliver, Iris Jean Gorman, Shades Mathison, Scott Von Wald, Scoot Herring, Trevor Charles, Jesse Priest, Xander Deveaux, Dan Duncan, Weber, Steven Wilber, Kevin Clarke Strauser, Drew Anderson, Crystal Alexander Kordowski, Gary Jones, Craig May, Joseph Ledington, and Ahmad Radheyyan, plus a special guest appearance by Portland alum Dylan Kasprzyk. Show starts at 10pm and goes until the Mayan calendar runs out.

Come to the Bagdad this Friday see the new crop of stand-ups that started this year! Show starts at 10pm and will, based on the length of the line-up, go on until early 2012. (This isn’t even the end of it: I believe there’s another run-off show next week.) But it’s certainly heartening to see just how many awesome people have joined the community this year. Go Portland comedy go!

Curious Comedy’s First Annual Fall Funnyraiser this Sat. 11/19!

Comedy cats and komedy kittens! If you haven’t checked out Curious Comedy’s new musical improv show “Rhapsody!”, this weekend would be a great time to do it. Curious is holding its first annual fundraiser on Saturday night.

For just $35 (which is apparently tax-deductable) you get a ticket to the performance and a three-course dinner and a drink ticket. Whoa people, did you hear that? Three courses PLUS a drink? Nobody could call you a cheap date. If you have $15 extra to shell out, you can get a VIP ticket which also gets you reserved seating and admittance to a cocktail hour at 6:30 with members of the cast and a steamed guest (my hope would be asparagus). Slide over to the Curious website for more details, including the evening’s menu, and to buy tickets.

If you can’t afford this level of luxury, do consider going to see the show on some other night. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about the show and its cast. Comedy, people! Comedy!

A Brief Pause for an Important Message

Apologies for getting all political and whatnot, but today is an incredibly important day for the internet. The Protect-IP Act is one of the biggest threats to ever face the internet, and today Congress is holding hearings about it. If it passes, it opens the door for censorship of the internet to a degree that we haven’t ever seen in this country and gives a tremendous amount of power to a small group of people in the entertainment industry.

It is Bad News Bears, people.

Oh my goodness, so many killer fresh comedians are coming to town right now! Last week it was Moshe Kasher and Hannibal Burress. This week it’s Hari Kondabolu! He is hilarious and ridiculously insightful. Not to be missed, srsly dudes. Plus lovable local sage Ron Funches is opening for him! IT GETS BETTERS!

The show is at The Woods (6637 SE Milwaukie Avenue) this Wednesday. Doors at 7, show at 8. $12 at the door or $10 if you get your shit together beforehand and buy tickets early (which you can do at thewoodsportland.com).

CHAD Chats [Fake TED Talks] at the Saratoga next Thursday 11/10!

You know about TED Talks, right? They are exciting and fascinating presentations from brilliant experts about important science discoveries and ideas of our time. They reach a global audience and contribute the spread of knowledge.

CHAD Chats are no different, except that they are presented by comedians about subjects in which they have very little formal training. And they happen in a bar. And they are hilarious.

Next Thursday, Nov. 10, catch Famous Author Mykle Hansen and local performers Dax Jordan, Virginia Jones, Christian Ricketts, and Reuben Nisenfeld speaking satirically and at length about Really Important Ideas. I will be facilitating the affair. Topics will include Ending Poverty through Facebook Statuses, Cats, Abraham Lincoln’s pants, Brain Chemistry, Everything, Nothing, and Carl Sagan.

Presentations begin promptly at 8pm on Thursday November 10th at THE SARATOGA BAR, 6910 N. Interstate. Full bar and menu. The bar’s monthly X-rated open-mic comedy (the Smutty Clown! which I also host alongside Sterling Clark) will follow. Good times will abound!

Portland, the amount of quality comedy in this town is ridiculous right now. You just can’t go anywhere without stepping on something new and different. I mean you can, it’s just hard because there’s all this new and different stuff laying haphazardly on the ground. We really should get a storage unit or something.

Anywho — this Friday, two AMAZING comedians are coming in from out of town and both of their shows are worth seeing. If you can find a way to see both, time-lord style, that would be the best option. But if you cannot do that, here are your other options:

OPTION #1
Matt Braunger, Alberta Rose Theater, 8pm and 10pm. $10. He’s recording his cd!!

OPTION #A
Doug Stanhope, Bagdad Theater, 9pm. $25. With Andy Andrist and Kristine Levine!!

ALSO KNOW that the really incredible duo The Sklar Brothers are in town at Helium [see them today or Saturday!] and a bunch of comics are going to be running amok in the Portland art museum. This Friday is going to rock.
